Rocks, dinos and plants, oh my! A look at San Bernardino County Museum
Nestled in the heart of San Bernardino sits a true gem that gives a glimpse into the world of history and science that surrounds us. The San Bernardino County Museum, located in Redlands, California, is home to quite a few exhibits that let you explore the history of the subject with informational panels, but also has many interactive exhibits that both children and adults can enjoy.
The exhibits they feature include:
- Hall of History – which explains the local history and shows artifacts from early Mesoamericans to the industrial boom in the Southern California.
- Hall of Earth Sciences – examines the geological events that took place, as well as our early prehistoric friends that roamed the earth before us.
- Schuiling Gallery – which currently exhibits the history and information about the California grizzly bear under a beautiful dome ceiling.
- Hall of Biodiversity – is host to a large collection of mounted animals native to Southern California and contains a lot of information about the diverse flora and fauna in the region.
- Minerals Rock! Unearthing the Human Element – This exhibit showcases some of the most beautiful minerals that are pulled from the earth that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and even ones that glow!
- Exploration Station – Gives you a chance to get up close to a variety of reptiles and insects.
I had a fantastic time at the museum and will return in the future for some more exploration. I really enjoyed learning about the indigenous cultures of California as well the many animals and minerals that make up this beautiful earth. The collection of artifacts and information is interesting, although I did feel like I belonged in an exhibit when I saw a corded phone was apart of the collection on display. But old dinosaur feelings aside, the prehistoric section took me back to an age of wonder when I would sit and daydream about when monsters still roamed the earth and being there took me back to that moment in time just for a second. I would highly recommend a trip to San Bernardino County Museum to give a little back to the community and learn a little bit more about the world around you.
